Long-time food author and critic Lauraine Jacobs says she is not surprised to see the slide in red meat consumption here in NZ. But she says New Zealanders’ are not eating more substitute meat or vegetarian products. She says total meat consumption has not dropped too significantly as twenty years ago, it was hard to get much pork, chicken or fish or even venison. Lauraine Jacobs says a lot of that shift from traditional red meat has come down to more choice. She also suggests the ubiquitous sushi roll has had a major impact particularly for day-time dining and convenience eating.
