Confidence in the kiwifruit industry’s growth is fuelling Mount Pack & Cool’s investment in increased packing and storage capacity at its 6.5ha site in Tauranga. In January, the fourth stage of development gets underway making it the largest individual post-harvest site in New Zealand, able to handle 24 million trays of kiwifruit by 2022. General manager Brendon Lee says Mount Pack & Cool’s rapid growth reflects the industry’s and Zespri’s positive market outlook. Brendon Lee says the company has gone from harvesting six million trays in 2018 to 12 million trays in 2020 and next year expects to handle at least seven million trays of Green kiwifruit and eight million trays of Gold and employ about 500 seasonal staff, and 100 permanent staff.
