The local butcher is facing an uncertain future under the current lockdown rules. A group representing independent butchers fears some may not survive an extended lockdown. Under level 4 butchers can provide contactless delivery but cannot offer click and collect to customers or physically open their doors. Retail Meat New Zealand spokesman Kit Arkwright says for many contactless delivery is not a viable option. He cites the cost of setting it up…  the ability and staff to load up a van and get it out to customers, and the availability of courier services which are right now under immense pressure? Kit Arkwright says he understands the lockdown is impacting all New Zealanders, but there are workable solutions that would allow butchers to keep their heads above water. One such is Mosgiel butcher Sam Hutchison – says he can do some deliveries but the shop’s income has been compromised.
