News yesterday of a farmer failing to register 820 animals under the NAIT scheme has rung alarm bells for those fearful of another incursion like M Bovis. MPI’s regional manager for NAIT Brendon Mikkelsen says the farmer had previously been reminded of his obligations which  came to light through movements of the 820 unregistered NAIT animals to four meat processing facilities in 2019. Brendon Mikkelsen say that by law, anyone in charge of cattle or deer must be registered and tag the animals with NAIT-tags. The maximum penalties for non-compliance are $100,000 for farmers and $200,000 for businesses.
