Meat processors are losing millions in value-added products as they attempt to get ahead of a backlog in cattle processing in Southland and it could take until September to clear the backlog. Alliance Group general manager of livestock Danny Hailes says the backlog is a result of reduced labour due to Omicron and Southland farmers desperately needing to move stock off farm because of the drought. Alliance says they could get rid of the backlog but with the shortage of labour they can’t focus on their value-added products . Silver Fern Farms chief supply chain officer Dan Boulton says they are also capturing less product from each animal due to the shortage of labour, so he says less value is being captured from each animal but more animals are getting off the farm faster.
