New Country of Origin food labelling regulations come into force tomorrow for fruit vegetables seafood meat and pork products. The regulations mean the likes of supermarkets now have to label where certain fresh, thawed or frozen foods come from when supplying or advertising these foods to consumers. The aim being to give consumers more information to enable them to make the right choice. Vanessa Horne from the Commerce Commission says the changes mean more clarity for consumers making split second decisions. It is great news for NZ pig farmers after years of trying to differentiate NZ grown pork from the thousands of tonnes that are imported. In fact 60% of NZ pork ham and bacon comes from overseas. Canterbury Pig Farmer Helen Andrews says human and animal welfare are guaranteed with NZ pork whereas who would know with the imported product.
