Farmers stand to lose $110 million and 27 million tonnes of food could go to waste if the Government does not allow skilled heavy machine operators into the country. At least 200 operators are needed and contracting firms are desperate to get operators in from overseas to carry out harvesting, hay baling and slurry removal. Rural Contractors chief executive Roger Parton says time is running out. A Rural Contractors survey showed that 8200 farmers and 57 contracting firms around the country rely on foreign seasonal labour between October and March and Roger Parton says the first overseas workers need to arrive next month.
