Tasman District growers are wondering if they’ll get any financial help after the Boxing Day hail storm. Ag Minister Damien O’Connor says requests have been made for Government support to help retain permanent staff and then have seasonal staff   get the trees and the vines back in shape for next season. Damien O’Connor, Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash met with growers last week. The Boxing Day storm will likely cost  more than $100 million through loss of income and damage. 300ha of the region’s 800ha apple crop would suffer a complete loss – with the other 500ha taking an average loss of about 30 per cent. Riwaka Apple grower Paul Thomas says some trees are so stressed they won’t recover for two seasons – a huge impact on growers.
