Two farming businesses have been fined after effluent – contaminated stormwater got into a polluted creek and a river near Te Anau. Scott Farming and Waiau Terraces were each ordered to pay $9750 in the Environment Court. Lawyer Tim Mackenzie said they were caught out when a storm came. The Judge revealed they had planted 1.5kms of plants and put up thousands of dollars of fencing since, so the sentences were discounted as the parties had no previous convictions, showed remorse and pled guilty. The effluent which got into the Waiau River was a mixture of soil, runoff and effluent and  Environment Southland lawyer Tim McGuigan, said the creek was already contaminated. While the Judge said it was not as serious as others that came before the court he had to take into account the effect of such discharge.
