The spotlight on the Rugby World Cup is being shared by a smelly little brown bug. Biosecurity Minister Damien O’Connor asks traveling Kiwis to be vigilant as it’s high-season for the crop-eating brown marmorated stink bug and so many kiwis are in the land of the bug – Japan.

Damien O’Connor says MPI is on high alert to stop the stink bug arriving in NZ. A recent swarm of green stink bug and yellow-spotted stink bug had occurred in Kobe, Japan, and Biosecurity.

The sneaky pest has been caught at the border many times, hitchhiking on passengers and in imported goods. Bio Security NZ has increased the number of additional risk countries from 16 to 33 and has upped mandatory pre-arrival treatment requirements for targeted vehicles, machinery, and parts. Cruise ship operators now have to take measures to prevent pests arriving here plus three dogs trained specifically to find stink bugs are now in service.
