Waikato farm sales have recorded the biggest drop in the country, according to Real Estate Institute data. In the three months to April 2022, Waikato was down 34 sales on the previous year. Nationally there were 54 fewer farms sales, an 11% decrease but for the Waikato, King Country and Taupō areas there had been a significant drop in dairy sales while sales of finishing properties throughout the Hauraki, Matamata, Waikato and Waipā districts, were strong. REINZ rural spokesperson Brian Peacocke says Waikato’s drop could be buyer resistance to purchasing second and third-tier farms where land isn’t so easy to farm and attracting staff was harder. Brian Peacocke says banks are saying they have plenty of money to lend but they are applying updated lending criteria.
