Fonterra has ordered dairy farmers to stop killing bobby calves unless they have a humane reason to do so. From June all non – replacement bobby calves are required to be raised for beef, veal, or pet food supply in order to adhere to consumer guarantee standards surrounding the treatment of calves. Agri Commentator and dairy farmer Dr Jacqueline Rowarth says Fonterra has been warning farmers this would happen but she is concerned raising bobby calves for product will impact production costs. New Zealand’s dairy herd numbers 4.8 million with around 1.9 million bobby calves born each year. 25% of those are raised as replacement dairy cows.
