Potential for forestry slash with Fonterra welcoming the success of Genesis’ Huntly wood fuel trial. Fonterra’s chief operating officer Fraser Whineray says the Coop plans to have all coal-fired boilers gone by 2037 and by using wood pellets Genesis can extend Huntly’s life and use existing boilers, which is cheaper than replacing them. Forestry companies have expressed an interest in a pellet plant in Te Tairāwhiti as a way of dealing with forest waste issues and Fraser Whineray estimates Fonterra would need about 77,000ha of low-grade logs and slash from a forest to replace the company’s entire coal needs. Suggestions that the government should contribute to kick-start a plant could come into play once there has been a full analysis of the wood fuel’s economics.
