New Zealand King Salmons quest to farm salmon in the cooler waters of Cook Strait has moved a step closer with it settling appeals against those plans. A mediation has resolved objections from the Department of Conservation and the McGuinness Institute and all parties have agreed on conditions for the Blue Endeavour farms. Acting Chief Executive Graeme Tregidga says the settlement still needs the approval of the Environment Court and then there will be 18 months of monitoring before any structures can be built. Graeme Tregidga estimates all going well the first commercial production will be in 2028. It has the potential to add up to 10,000 metric tonnes of fish in conjunction with nursery sites when fully developed.
