New Zealand’s top young farmers are battling it out in the annual FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final. Timaru is the location this year for the prestigious competition – now in its 55th year – with seven Grand Finalists gunning for the coveted title of FMG Young Farmer of the Year and around $90,000 worth of prizes. Current champion Northern regions Tim Dangen says it is a bit like running an ultra marathon over around 62 hours. There are two women this year in the grand final along mother of two Lisa Kendall from the Northern region alongside Emma Poole. And two of Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor’s nephews are also finalists. The O’Connor brothers 25 year old Peter and 20 year old Nick are representing the Aorangi and Tasman regions respectively. Peter is a dairy farm manager and Nick at Lincoln University.
