Most of NZ’s food imports are dominated by imported grain which according to Eat NZ is a missed opportunity as NZ has the capability of growing enough for the domestic supply. Eat NZ is an organisation committed to telling the NZ food story. A report co-authored by CEO Angela Clifford says most NZ grain is grown in the South Island but consumed in the North and the cost of getting it there is prohibitive allowing imported product to be cheaper to access. Angela Clifford says there is plenty of land but farmers cant compete with cheaper imports. She says with what is happening in Ukraine it is now even more important to improve our infrastructure to get South Island grain to the North.
