Labour’s biggest vote catcher is likely to be taking 15% GST off fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables from April 2024, if re-elected. The saving will be around $5 a week on an average spend of $30 in the fruit and vegetable section and the determining factor is processing; so the exemption would not apply to “canned and dried items, or juices” but to fresh and frozen fruit and veg. Vegetables New Zealand Chair John Murphy says the debate on removing GST from food is a welcome one and Vege NZ applauds any attempt to increase fresh vegetable consumption and make it easier for growers to be viable because of the health benefits. He says if changing tax settings would decrease the cost that consumers and growers face, then we should look seriously at a change.
