For the second year in a row a heavy frost hit some Kiwifruit orchards in the Bay of Plenty. Fortunately growers were prepared this time and managed to avoid any serious damage to the crops at a pivotal time of their growth. Seeka Kiwifruit Industries has farms and packhouse and CEO Michael Franks says they dodged a bullet by ready ready for this years frost unlike previous years. Thompson’s Horticulture has grape and kiwifruit orchards in Te Puke and Opotiki and says increased frost protection looks like it will need to be factored into future budgets.
