South Island growers may soon have a new way to sell their ugly fruit and vegetables – the ones considered not pretty enough for the supermarkets. Wonky Box takes that fruit and sells it on line and now is planning to expand its fresh produce delivery service from the North Island to Christchurch. This follows the closure of online supermarket Supie this week, as the weight of the supermarket duopoly pushes down on independent retailers. Wonky Box has diverted 1.9 million kilograms of aesthetically-challenged fresh produce from waste and co-founder Angus Simms says there are a lot of growers in the South Island and while a smaller population there is arguably less competition. He was not surprised that the new Rabobank and charity KiwiHarvest study found more New Zealanders would choose lower-priced imperfect fruit or vegetables over the more expensive regular-appearance produce.
