Half a tonne of venison from the controversial North Canterbury Hunting Competition has been processed by volunteers and the Hope Community Trust and distributed it to those in need. The competition made headlines all over the world in the lead-up to the event when it encouraged contestants to shoot feral cats, a serious threat to several native species in New Zealand. The controversy briefly flared up again as animal rights protesters and competitors confronted one another. Event organiser local farmer Mat Bailey, says the charity initiative was “a great day for the community” and raised $60,000 for the Rotherham school and community pool. He made no apologies for including feral cats in the target due to the effect the wild cats are having on birdlife and biodiversity.
