Significant changes in the rules around velvet exports to China will open an opportunity for the New Zealand velvet industry according to Deer Industry NZ chief executive Innes Moffat. In future velvet imported into China for traditional Chinese medicine will need to be dried nor frozen. Frozen velvet exports to other markets will continue. Innes Moffat says Deer Industry NZ is working to ensure the supply chain continues to grow the industry. But he is optimistic longer term the NZ velvet industry will be more secure. He says nothing changes immediately, allowing time to prepare for these changes and make a smooth transition and provide an ability to add further value in NZ.
