The local avocado industry says its committed to reducing its environmental footprint as the global market for the popular fruit expands. That was the message to hundreds of international growers and industry executives who gathered at the 10th World Avocado Congress held in Auckland this week. Its the first time the congress has come to NZ and Avocado chief executive Jen Scoular says bringing the event to Auckland had been five years in the making. She says with 1200 people here at the congress – 750 from overseas – really highlights that people have seen us but putting that into perspective New Zealand makes up just 1.5 per cent of the $12 billion global industry, and Jen Scoular says that will jump to $20b by 2030 and even though NZ’s production has grown 20 per cent, due to world production expanding NZ will still sit at 1.5 per cent of the market in five years’ time.
