Westland Milk Products is investing $70 million to expand its manufacturing of dairy protein lactoferrin. Chinese-owned Westland will treble production of the protein at its Hokitika factory and in the process become one of the top producers in the world. Westland chief executive Richard Wyeth says the new plant is all part of a plant to produce specialised ingredients from its milk supply. Lactoferrin, is used in the manufacture of infant formula and is in strong demand worldwide, and its new plant would give it an alternative method of making the product, which would broaden its appeal and sales.
